Why She Stays or Goes Back

She may stay because she has slowly become accustomed to the violence.

The violence escalates slowly over time and she loses perspective on how serious and unusual it is. Living with constant abuse numbs the victim so that she is unable to recognize that she is involved in a set pattern of abuse.  The real question is not 'Why does she stay?' but 'Why does he abuse her?'
