Our dreams are powerful.  She may have nurtured her dream since childhood, a dream that includes ideals of husband, house, home, children, friends, family, etc.  In order to leave the abuser, she may have to abandon that dream, and that raises the bar very high. But why should she have to consider leaving at all?  She just wants him to stop abusing her.  And only he can do that.
