He may have told her “I can't live without you. If you leave me I will die / kill myself.” And she believes him. Even though this is a tactic designed to control her, she knows it could happen.  And a person willing to kill himself is too likely to be willing to kill her and/or her children too. Unfortunately, she can't make him change or fix him.  It's up to him to take responsibility for stopping the violence.
