She may feel shame and humiliation in front of the community. She may say to herself, "I don't want anyone else to know. I would be so embarrassed." One thread of our cultural fabric clearly holds women as responsible for how their husbands treat them, and many people are quick to judge her. In fact, that's exactly what we do when we ask “Why doesn't she leave?”.  Unfortunately, she is not responsible and nothing she does or doesn't do can make him stop abusing her. It's up to him to take responsibility for the abuse, and for stopping it.
